The Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica (BGCSM) is celebrating the 25th anniversary of their respected Family Assistance program that has helped thousands of families over the years create a joyful and memorable holiday season.
One of the Club’s most rewarding programs, Family Assistance, targets families that are experiencing severe hardship, and then provides them with essential shopping opportunities. Selected families from Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica’s 10 sites are given $100 gift cards to purchase necessities such as clothing and groceries, as well as toys to surprise the children.
In addition to providing funds for shopping, the Family Assistance program also offers support to families with dire needs such as beds, appliances and even assists homeless families in finding a better living situation.
The Family Assistance program was launched in 1988 when a Club member’s apartment burnt to the ground, and the single mother and her three kids had nowhere to go. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica stepped in, found another apartment, paid the first and last month’s rent and bought groceries. In addition, Peter Barrett from Barrett’s Appliances donated a refrigerator, and his son Pat has continued this tradition to the present day.
Thank you for helping us spread the joy to some very deserving families this holiday season.
