For years, Marcel lived a comfortable life. His father had a thriving career, his mother stayed home with Marcel and his sister, and they lived in a nice home in a quiet Los Angeles suburb. Then the economic recession came along, bringing stress and turmoil to the Mitchell family and resulting in the loss of jobs and the family home. Both parents were able to find jobs, but they were far away, forcing the family to commute four hours each day just to get to work and school. Through the upheaval, the family stuck together and Marcel found additional support at the Boys & Girls Club, which helped him to focus on his school work. A 3-year Club member, Marcel participates in Keystone and Leaders in Training, and coaches younger members in basketball – his favorite sport.
Marcel, 17, is a senior at Santa Monica High School and plans to attend college to pursue a career in sports broadcasting or youth development.
