CollegeBound Campus Tour

On January 22 and 23rd, CollegeBound staff and five lucky high schoolers embarked on a College Campus Tour which spanned across California State University San Marcos, San Diego State University, UC San Diego, and CSU Long Beach. Student panels, tours lead by select members of student organizations and motivational speakers were just some of the great components of the trip.

After all this excitement, the Santa Monica CollegeBound team was invited to the Boys and Girls Club of San Marcos. There, they were greeted by the Branch Director, President,  Board and Keystone members as they enjoyed a night of fun-filled activities, including a friendly game of Dodge ball,  and bonded over a pizza dinner.

Q & A With Jonas and the Los Angeles Youth Network

On August 27th, over a hundred SMBGC members, staff, members of the community and volunteers met to educate themselves on youth homelessness. KooDooZ, a cause-based social networking site for kids organized the event to include speakers from the Los Angeles Youth Network and Jonas, the 7-year-old founder of Love in the Mirror. The following is a portion of the question and answer session from that night where many of the kids were able to ask their questions.

Hollow Words
by Max S.

As I read my book,
Where any intelligence or wit is useless.
That last fiction book,
When I was done with it I took
Only entertainment,
I read and read,
Only to feed,
My hunger for excitement,
I always yearn,
For something to learn,
When I read a fiction book.,
I must read non-fiction,
To administer jurisdiction,
To the void of knowledge in
Hollow words.

Sports Highlights @ the club

Athlete Spotlight: Brand T. and Immani M.

Brandon T.

We have some great kids and athletes in our department and I’m happy to play a part in helping these young kids show their talents through sports. Brandon is one special athlete. He is a person who participates regularly at a very high level in all sports activities we have at the club. He has gotten better day by day, month by month, year to year through a lot of willpower and hard work. During this time at the club, he has developed many techniques and an ability to be a great leader on and off the court. Brandon not only made the All-Star team this year, he was the team captain. Since Biddy Basketball ended this season, the All-Star team has won 5 tournaments, lost only one game, and led his team to a remarkable 31-1 record that speaks for itself. Even though he has plays basketball at a super high level, it’s more impressive how Brandon’s carries himself at an even higher level with a wonderful attitude that rubs off on everyone including myself.

Imanni M.

Imanni certainly wins the award for the best smile in our program. She has been coming to the club since she was young and has always been one of our most impressive members since her very first day. Imanni is always willing to help the athletic program with different things like scoreboard duty or helping run different events like war ball. But what really made me stand out to me is when I first coached Imanni in Biddy Basketball. What struck me is how hard she would work and didn’t care that she was the only girl on a team full of boys. This young lady has done a great job over the years showing great skills in basketball and sportsmanship characteristics like fairness, courage, and maintaining self-control in dealing with others. Imanni is a true top notch kid that is a positive role model to all the younger and older kids in the athletic program that we all love. She is special, so don’t be surprised when Imanni gets to high school and you see her name in the paper or see her on TV.
