Club Happenings-May E-Newsletter
With Spring Break now behind us, we know that Summer is upon us soon. April was full of fun activities and our Club has been jumping with busy members participating all throughout the Club. Power Hour is still in effect. Members are getting homework done before they can play. The Artshop kids were hard at work creating a new mural for the cabinets as you can seen in the photo collage above.
Athletics completed the Biddy Basketball season and has begun teen basketball, a girls travelling basketball team, and girls volleyball. Our Skatepark has been preparing for their Annual LA All Day Skate Competition on May 1st. Our Teen Center is extra busy with Knock Out for Girls a self defense boxing class, SAT classes, and weekly runs with the fitness club.
Our Sound Studio has been extra busy. One of our very own members BASIL BARKAS is the Pacific Region Winner for the Music category of the Digital Arts Festival. His inspirational song “Where I want to Be” was recorded in our very own Music Studio with the amazing guidance and production of Carly Escoto. He has won a $75 gift card along with an automatic entry in the National Festival in where he can win a trip to anywhere in the greater US. So if you see Basil or Carly, congratulate them on a job well done.
We are doing our best to participate in a variety of National Boys & Girls Clubs Year of Service projects. In honor of the “Big Green Help,” we had a special Earth Day Celebration. We began a recycling program in the Gamesroom. Torch Club members helped with the planting of new blossoms in our front garden and released over 500 ladybugs into our garden. And we had a special tree dedication in honor of Allan Young for the 47 years of service to our Club. Thank you to Armstrongs Garden Center for donating the flowering plants and to Queennette who is from a local community garden for volunteering her time to help educate & plant with the kids. Please see photos in collage above.

Community Notes…
Measure A will provide critical funding to protect our outstanding local Santa Monica-Maibu schools. The State has cut over $10 million from our local schools in each of the past 2 years, with more cuts on the way. Measure A is critically needed to prevent a serious decline in the quality of our schools and will allow SMMUSD to maintain the great teachers and strong academics that make our district among the best in the state. http://www.savesantamonicamalibuschools.org/pdf/Factsheet.pdf
